Volunteer Opportunities

As a small grassroots organization, we are defined by our volunteers. They make the difference that makes our work possible. SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve is a small organization with a big impact! Because of our dedicated volunteers, we’ve been able to protect nearly 100 acres in South King County, restore fragile wetland habitat to ensure healthy water and forests, and reach nearly 3,000 people every year through our programs and events. We value our volunteers and welcome you to the SHADOW family.

We offer a variety of ways to get involved, and encourage you to contact us with your own ideas to help our organization grow.

Currently Seeking:

Restoration Work Party Volunteers:

Join the Preserve's grassroots efforts to to restore and maintain vital habitat in South King County. No experience necessary, snacks and tools provided. Work Parties are a great opportunity to increase your knowledge about the natural world around you, while working outside with new friends. Check our calendar page for the Work Party schedule and to discover what we are working on this season!

Outreach Ambassadors:

Increase SHADOW's visibility by representing us in your local community and promoting us through your social networks! A great opportunity to network and practice public speaking. Outreach events are a fun and engaging way to experience the local community's events and culture. SHADOW ambassadors will get a glimpse at the inner workings of this dynamic nonprofit and make a huge impact on the Preserve's capacity to do good.

Environmental Educators and Teaching Assistants:

SHADOW reaches nearly 1,500 local students and their families every year through our experiential education programs. We are seeking education professionals, students receiving their teaching degrees, and teachers to assist us with the continued strengthening, evaluation, and implementation of our education program in a variety of ways.

Administrative Assistants:

Running a nonprofit organization takes a lot of behind-the-scenes work and daily operations. Help the Preserve's small staff do more with a variety of administrative tasks including data entry, filing, marketing/education material production, and more!

Event Staffing:

Each season the Nature Preserve hosts a variety of educational community events. From our famous, annual Frog Frolic  to classes on Native Plant identification, there is always a lot going on! Come down and help to facilitate games and crafts, sell raffle tickets or keep an eye on children in the bog.

Technical Support:

SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve is in the midst of a re-brand. This is an exciting process and time for our organization! We are looking for help translating this new brand to our various web platforms. We are also looking for assistance manipulating our SalesForce Database. Whether you are experienced in IT or simply looking to increase your skills, we would love your help!
