So far, 2017 has been a difficult year for the environmental community. The United States’ new leadership has made it overwhelmingly clear that it plans to dismantle much of the existing infrastructure for environmental protection. This affront is aimed largely at public lands, as well as at clean air and waterways.
There are already several bills making their way through the House and Senate that, if passed, will greatly diminish our country’s biodiversity and limit access to green spaces for everyone. This is a critical moment, in which all citizens must act on a local level before our natural wonders are lost forever.
SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve was founded by concerned citizens who took action. In the early 1990’s, SHADOW’s founders, Max and Erin Prinsen, realized that one of King County’s last remaining, healthy, peat-bogs neighbored their home. They did not wait for the government to act. Instead, they pooled their personal resources with those of the local community and purchased the 18-acre parcel containing Shadow Lake Bog in order to place it under permanent protection.
Since those early days, SHADOW has grown into a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that stewards over 100 acres of wild land in Southeast King County. Over the past two decades, the organization has repeatedly proven its ability to leverage funds, find matching grants, and multiply the impact of all contributions it receives.
This May 10th, on Seattle’s seventh annual GiveBIG day, please take action for the preservation of green spaces in South King County and the education of the next generation of land stewards. We promise to do what we have done for the past 20 years; put your money to work so that it can go further! If the government is not going to do it, the responsibility falls to all of us!
