SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk: Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Birds are one wildlife sighting we often take for granted\, but birders have long known the excitement of discovery and the beauty of common species we don’t often stop to observe. Join the naturalists on a guided walk in the mossy woods of Shadow to learn about some of the birds that call our forests home! We have recently begun a community science project to catalog birds present\, through which we hope to learn seasonal patterns and even practices to increase habitat for birds in decline. This ties into the annual global event happening this weekend: the Great Backyard Bird Count. Participants spend time in their favorite places observing and counting as many birds as they can find and report their findings. This helps scientists better understand global bird populations. \nGuided nature walks happen rain or shine\, so please dress to keep yourself warm and dry. Participants walk away with a deeper sense of connection with nature\, and the people around them.\nThis is a great way to show yourself some love\, or to connect with a partner. Join us and engage mindfully with the nature preserve through several beginner friendly guided meditations with our partner Cascadia Forest Therapy. Your sensory-focused time in nature will culminate in a reflective tea ceremony.\nThis event is fee based on a sliding scale with a per person cost of $35.00-$50. DESCRIPTION:Got bats?  We do\, and we couldn’t be happier!  Did you know that Washington State has 15 of the 47 species of bats found in the US?  Here at SHADOW we have been able to document that 8 of those species call our habitats home! Want to find out how you can help bat populations and become a citizen scientist at the same time?  Well then join us here at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve before the days get too much shorter to observe some of our marvelous and mysterious native bat species. We are partnering with the Woodland Park Zoo to host their ongoing summer 🦇Bat Activity Trends 🦇citizen science program!  Jennifer Tallman from Woodland Park Zoo and Stephanie Miller from SHADOW will be on hand to give an informational presentation about the importance of bats to our ecosystem\, and then we will head to the observation sites to monitor bat activity for an ongoing study.  We will also be joined by Girl Scout Maya Gibbens who will share fascinating fact about bats and how to house them in your yard as part of her Silver Award project! DESCRIPTION:Registration Required\nNational Moth Week celebrates the beauty\, life cycles\, and habitats of moths. “Moth-ers” of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about\, observe\, and document moths in their backyards\, parks\, and neighborhoods. National Moth Week is being held\, worldwide\, during the last full week of July. \nNMW offers everyone\, everywhere a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths. Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories\, NMW participants can help map moth distribution and provide needed information on other life history aspects around the globe. \nJoin us at 7:00 to identify and count our native moths!\nPlease be sure and register so we know how many people to expect.\n (Arrive at 6:30 for a bog tour before our moth-venture.) \nWhy Moths?\nMoths are important pollinators for crops and flowers\, and serve as a food source for birds\, bats\, and other animals. \nMoths are among the most diverse and successful organisms on earth. \nScientists estimate that there are 150\,000\, and possibly more than 500\,000 moth species globally. \nTheir colors and patterns may be dazzling\, or plain\, or cryptically camouflaged. Shapes and sizes range from small as a pinhead (micro-moths) to as large as an adult hand (macro moths). \nWhy So Late?\nMost moths are nocturnal\, they fly at night\, so we look for them at night to see them. But some fly during the day as well. DESCRIPTION:Event Cancelled\nWe are sorry to announce that due to the low forecast of rain we have decided to cancel the Family Campfire Night in May so as to not risk any potential sparks causing a fire in the preserve.  We are planning other summer activities that can be done in lieu of a campfire and will resume our last Saturday of the Month Family Nights at SHADOW in June.  We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope to see you in June! \n
