False Solomon’s Seal – Maianthemum racemosum
Seemingly disappearing in the Fall and Winter, this native flower pops back up in the Spring. When mature, the stems zig-zag in lengths from 1 to 3 feet. The leaves extend alternately along the stem and can be up to 6 inches long. As the plant grows through Spring, it produces lovely white flowers and eventually bright red berries. In the past, Native Americans used the root and leaves to produce medicinal teas. Birds and rodents are important for spreading the seeds of this beautiful native Lily. Try and spot it next time you visit SHADOW’s upland area in the Spring.
