At the end of October, the Natural Heritage Advisory Council voted to include the Shadow Lake bog in the Washington Register of Natural Areas, in recognition of the high conservation value of the bog and Shadow Lake Nature Preserve’s efforts to protect the site!

According to a Department of Natural Resources report, “Shadow Lake Nature Preserve currently is the only site that affords some protection to the globally critically imperiled (G1S1) Western Hemlock/Sphagnum, Treed Bog.” We are extremely proud of this designation and look forward to a long future of protecting this extremely rare natural resource.
