Thanks to our dedicated volunteers our Boardwalk Trail has been repaired and is now open for access. Thank you to all who have volunteered or donated to our Boardwalk. Rules of Access

The Nature Preserve is open 9 am – 6 pm, Monday – Saturday.

Grounds are closed on Sunday.

For your safety, if you plan to use SHADOW’s Uplands Trails,


We require that Uplands visitors submit the above form before accessing the property.

Visitors use this land at their own risk. Please call 911 in case of emergency. 

Stay On Trail AT ALL TIMES to protect critical habitat.

Carry out all trash and leave only footprints.

Pets are NOT allowed on trails at SHADOW.

Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while on the property.

Firearms are prohibited at SHADOW. This includes airsoft, paintball, and all such devices.

Smoking, vaping, and the use of illegal drugs are prohibited.

• Collect: animals, plants, rocks, or natural materials
• Hunt, fish, trap, touch, or feed wildlife
• Bring bicycles, horses, or motorized vehicles
• Camp or ignite fires

As a courtesy, groups of 15+ should contact the office with the anticipated date and time their group will be at the nature preserve at least a week in advance. A point of contact for the group will need to be identified. We strongly suggest a donation of $5 per person for groups of this size.  

Getting to SHADOW

SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve’s Office & Ritcher Education Center are located at 21656 184th Ave SE Renton, WA 98058.  

Office & Richter Education Center 

SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve is on the West side of the road. Look for the wooden arch and gravel parking lot. SHADOW’s Office is located at the top of the outdoor staircase to the left of the education building. 

Please note: The white mobile home is a private residence. If you need to contact someone please come by the office or give us a call


Parking is available in the gravel lot. During events and on sunny days this lot fills up quickly! When this occurs, please feel free to park along the shoulder of 184th Ave SE. 

Please use caution when parking on the side of road and look both ways for passing traffic.

Shadow Lake Bog & Boardwalk 

SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve’s ¼ mile (round-trip) boardwalk trail takes you through the beautiful SHADOW Lake Bog. Access the trail head from the gravel lot in front of the Richter Education Center.

Upland Forest

Open 9 am – 6 pm, Monday – Saturday, closed on Sunday. No pets please. 

All Upland Forest visitors are required to submit an Uplands Access form prior to accessing the property. 

The Uplands Entrance to the Nature Preserve is located on the north side of Peter Grubb Rd. SE in between SE 224th St. and 186th Ave SE.

Hang a left out of SHADOW’s main parking lot and follow 184th Ave SE, as it turns into Peter Grubb Rd. SE. After passing SE 224th St., keep your eyes pealed for SHADOW’s gate on your left. There is room for three cars to park outside the gate. Visitors may access the property on foot. Access Form. 

Event Rental Space

Host your next event at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve! 

Rent out the spacious and rustic Richter Education Center for community gatherings, meetings, field days, parties, and events. Roll up the doors in summer and enjoy an open-air event. Guests will have the opportunity to view the famous Shadow Lake Bog.
