This tour will focus on succession forestry management of an over-crowded alder forest. Learn about how to evolve a degraded stand from a liability to an asset while maintaining wildlife habitat! Succession forestry is modeled after natural processes and focuses on creating a mixed-conifer forest to provide high quality functions for land managers and native wildlife. This walking tour will highlight stand re-generation, invasive species management, succession forestry, and managing stands for wildlife value. After the tour, join Nature Preserve staff in a walk through our 5,000-year-old peat bog. Learn about this unique habitat and the value of wetlands in a forest, then conclude the evening with a dessert potluck!
Happy Independence Day! We hope your celebrations are joyous and nature filled! SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve's trails, the Richter Education Center, and office will be closed in observance of the holiday. We will reopen on Friday.
